About Elephant Fountain
On 31 December 1879, on the last day of the year of Emperor Franz Josef and Empress Elisabeth's silver wedding anniversary, an "Emperor's lime tree" (pictured in the historical image) was planted in the square in front of the Elephant hotel. The tree was later removed by the fascist regime. In 1953, the municipal building authority planned and designed a fountain and had it erected by the stonemason Gino Bernardi in the place where the tree once stood.
